Driving in snow can be very intimidating experience to most drivers. If you have never driven in snow before or rarely do, you may not feel as comfortable facing snowing conditions as those who do on a regular basis. The following guide lists five tips to help you acclimate to driving in the snow:

1. Preparation: This is essential in learning any new skill. The better you can prepare before you are thrust into snowy conditions, the more apt you will be to successfully handle the situation. If your area offers classes for driving in the snow, you should consider taking one. Your insurance may even cut you a deal.

2. Check Your Tires: During the colder months your tires should be inflated higher than normal. This is because the cold air naturally deflates the tires, providing less grip to your car on the road.

3. Drive Slowly: This can not be emphasized enough. Take your time driving in the snow, regardless of how many cars you have behind you or how closely they are following you.

4. Distance Yourself: In poor driving conditions, it is always advisable to allow more space between you and the car in front of you.

5. Know Your Car: You should know if your car is front-wheel or rear-wheel drive. Front-wheel cars are typically better in the snow, whereas rear-wheel cars can end up spinning their wheels aimlessly.

When you are driving it is always best to be aware of what to do in case of a roadside emergency. Rather it is a technical problem or just a flat tire; ensure that you have pulled over to the side of the road where it will not cause an injury to you or another driver. Once your are pulled over, if it is safer, get out of the car on the passenger’s side of the car and place flares or other warning devices near your car to warn other drivers. Contact emergency numbers for assistance. At this point, if you can do the repairs then do so, otherwise get back into the car and wait for help. Something every car should have is an emergency kit which contains flares, bottled water, flashlight with batteries, blankets, food, jumper cables, shovel, tool kit, sand or kitty litter for traction, an extra cell phone battery, a couple of games or a deck of cards, and a first kit containing all of the basics. If you or someone who normally rides in your car takes some form of medication, make sure that you have some with you in the emergency kit in case it takes a while for help to get to you.

A roadside emergency can occur at any time, to any person who is driving. These emergencies can range from a mechanical malfunction or flat tire to a health issue. Knowing what to do in an emergent situation can lower the risk of harm to you, your vehicle and other drivers.

Prepare an emergency kit and keep it in the trunk of your vehicle at all times. This kit should have a bottle of water, blankets, flares and a flashlight, at the very minimum. When an emergency occurs, pull as far to the side of the road as you can. Make sure your vehicle is visible to other drivers. Use flares in front of and behind your vehicle. If you have a mechanical issue, lift the hood of the vehicle.

You should not get out of your vehicle on the side with traffic going by. Instead, exit through the other door. Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on if there is nowhere safe to sit or stand away from your vehicle. If you choose to get out of your vehicle, make sure you do not stand next to, in front of or behind it. Many drivers don’t pay attention and strike stalled cars on the side of the road. If you are near your vehicle you could get injured.Keep looking, there’s more: GM debuts next step in vehicle-to-vehicle communications w/video
